Support Needed To Prevent Unwanted Teen Pregnancies – Study

New research has found that almost a quarter of teenagers in England and Wales who have an abortion, have been pregnant at least once before.

The study, which has been published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, covers just England and Wales, and involved data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Department of Health of women under the age of 20, from between 1992 to 2013.

It was revealed that almost a quarter of teenagers choosing to have an abortion, have already been in contact with health services for a previous birth or termination.

In addition, the proportion of teens having an abortion as a result of a subsequent pregnancy rose by 33%. Those behind the paper said that the increase mostly occurred before 2004, and now appears to have stabilised, however.

In 2013, 22.9% teenagers who underwent an abortion had had at least one previous pregnancy. Fewer than 5% who obtained an abortion had more than one previous pregnancy.

Researchers have said more advice and support is now needed in order to prevent teenage pregnancies.

They added: "Greater policy emphasis must be placed on the accurate identification of the proportion of teenage pregnancies that occur as a result of a subsequent pregnancy and developing more effective 'secondary prevention' interventions to help the first-time pregnant and parenting teenagers manage their future reproductive lives and prevent further unplanned pregnancies."

The study can be read in full here.
