Almost half of parents in the UK have admitted they plan to take their children out of school over the next 12 months for a holiday.
The study, conducted by sunshine.co.uk, involved 1,996 parents of children at school-age. They were asked about their upcoming holiday plans, in order to see how many families were planning to take a holiday during term-time.
Parents were first asked, 'Did you take your child out of school during term time for a holiday in the last academic year?', to which 24% said they had. However, when asked if they planned to take their child out of school over the next 12 months in order to go on a holiday, 49% said yes.
Of those who did plan to take their children out of school, 82% said they would even be willing to pay a fine in order to do so. They were then quizzed on just how much of a fine they would be willing to pay. On average, parents said they would pay £210.
When asked why they want to remove their children from school in order to go on holiday, instead of waiting for holiday weeks, the top answer was to save money (91%). To coincide with a special occasion (e.g. their birthday) was next on the list with 42%, while coinciding with the best weather in chosen destination (23%) was next. To fit with when other family members can go (16%) and to fit with work commitments/annual leave (9%), rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile, an honest 66% said they felt that taking a holiday during term-time would have "no effect whatsoever" on their child's education in the long-term.
Commenting on the findings, Sue Anderson, sunshine.co.uk, said: "Parents can sometimes act too quickly in terms of taking their kids out of school during term time for a holiday, because there are really good deals to be had during school holidays too.
"Sometimes, by the time you pay a fine, it could have worked out cheaper to go away in the actual holiday time that is provided. Don't act too impulsively and make sure you shop around for deals. You might be pleasantly surprised and your child might not have to miss any school at all."
