The poll, commissioned by Big Yellow Storage, revealed that possessions is one of the largest causes of disagreements between separating couples – coming only second to money issues.
While many admit to arguing over possessions for sentimental and financial reasons, some 13% of respondents said they do so just for the sake of it.
For almost half of Britons, they confessed to going as far as to hide their possessions during a relationship break-up, just so they could keep them, with photos, 'keepsakes' and heirlooms among those items being stashed away. An additional 11% of respondents said they wish they had hidden items during a separation.
Elsewhere, on average, people are said to throw out £394 worth of possessions in anger during separation, with 16% having thrown away items totalling over £500. However, 40% later regretted their decision to get rid of the items.
The top 10 items that were found to cause the most arguments during a divorce are:
1. Car (26%)
2. Photos (24%)
3. Keepsakes (22%)
4. Heirlooms (21%)
5. Television (20%)
6. Laptop/computer/tablet (17%)
7. Bed (16%)
8. Sofas (16%)
9. White goods e.g. washing machine, dryer (10%)
10. Records/CDs (9%).
Andrew G Marshall, a marital therapist, is quoted as saying: "The results of this survey reveal how relatively unimportant material possessions take on a more emotive role during the turmoil of a break-up, adding conflict at a very difficult time. People throw out treasured items in the heat of the moment, but can come to regret it at a later date."
A spokesperson for Big Yellow Storage said: "Divorce can be a stressful and emotional time for those involved and impulsive decisions can cause not just emotional regret, but also financial regret. At Big Yellow we can provide a safe haven for these belongings while things calm down a bit."
