Martina Anderson, an MEP with the party, said after the vote: "This report calls on the Commission to put forward a strategy at EU level for equality on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity and calls on Member States to adopt laws and policies to combat homophobia and transphobia.
"The fact that transgender people are still considered mentally ill in the majority of Member States is absolutely deplorable and this report called on them to review national mental health catalogues, while ensuring that medically necessary treatment remains available for all trans people."
She continued: "As an Irish citizen, I was proud to support this report today. We have civil marriage equality on most of the island of Ireland, as we have in most of the EU, therefore the onus is on the remaining jurisdictions, in particular the north, to offer the same.
"It is a nonsensical that our gay and lesbian citizens living in Derry are not given the freedom to marry in in their own communities and with their own families when they have the right to do so, a few miles down the road, in Donegal.
"Sinn Féin will continue to work towards affording members of the LGB&T community in the north with the same equality as those in the south."
Currently, Northern Ireland is the only region in the UK where same-sex marriage is still illegal. In May 2015, same-sex marriage was introduced into law following a referendum.
