The research, conducted by charity Drinkaware, involved 1,506 women who are either pregnant or have recently become a mother. It discovered that 88% of those admitted they didn't approve of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, except for the odd sip or when it is a special occasion.
Interestingly, half of respondents said they didn't receive any advice about drinking while pregnant. For those who did receive advice, midwives were more likely to talk to the women about the issue. Yet just 20% of women were able to identify the current guidance – with a further eight in 10 believing it to be more strict than it is.
When asked, most women said they only drank once or twice during their pregnancy, with women in the 18 to 29 age bracket drinking less than older mothers-to-be (36 years and older). In total, 92% of women are not exceeding the current guidelines of more than two units once or twice a week.
56% of women confessed they had received “conflicting” information regarding drinking alcohol during their pregnancy, with 33% saying they found the advice unclear and difficult to understand.
Elaine Hindal, Chief Executive at Drinkaware, is quoted as saying the research highlights the importance of clear advice being given to parents, in order that they can make informed choices, but added: "For many mothers, the current government guidelines do not go far enough."
Ian Currie, Vice President for UK affairs, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), commented: "We are very encouraged by these results, which suggest that the majority of women choose not to drink alcohol during pregnancy. We sympathise with women who find the current advice conflicting, but the general advice still remains that there is no known safe amount of alcohol that you can drink during pregnancy."
