The research, commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, found that couples will now wait, on average, for four months after they marry before they go on their honeymoon.
Almost 2,000 people took part in the study, with just a quarter of participants saying they went on their first holiday as husband and wife immediately after their big day. 76% on the other hand, chose to delay their honeymoon. Of those, 37% admitted they needed more time to save for the trip, while 23% said they wanted to keep the 'post-wedding blues' away and have something to look forward to. For 19%, they said they were simply too busy to go on holiday, while 12% confessed that they were unable to get the time off work to go.
For those who jet off on honeymoon straight after their ceremony, Italy was the top destination, while the U.S. was the most popular spot among couples choosing to delay their holiday.
Chris Clarkson, Managing Director, sunshine.co.uk, said of the findings: "We think delaying a honeymoon is a fantastic idea. Weddings are hectic and it sometimes pays to wait a while and not jump straight from the chaos of the big day and everything that's involved right into post-wedding bliss.
"It's not always that simple and if you go away immediately after your big day then you may be too exhausted to fully enjoy your trip. A big bonus of postponing a honeymoon is that it gives you a little while to settle any wedding debt and save for your trip, so that you can have an even better and more indulgent break.
"What's more, you may receive more financial wedding gifts than you expected and these can be used to plan your budget for your honeymoon. Weddings are expensive and you don't want to look back on your honeymoon and regret that you had to go straightaway and have a lower budget trup than you wanted."
