The couple have been subject to split rumours throughout their entire marriage, but on Monday, they issued a joint statement confirmed the end of their marriage.
They told the AP: "This is not the future we envisioned. And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately.
"We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."
Lambert, 31, and Shelton, 39, started dating in 2006. In 2010, Shelton proposed to his partner. They tied the knot in May 2011 in Boerne, Texas.
