Fermanagh and Omagh Council in Northern Ireland has passed a motion in support of same-sex marriage. The vote was passed by 25 votes to 13 at a meeting earlier this week.
The endorsement has been welcomed by SDLP Omagh Councillor Joanne Donnelly.
Speaking after the vote, Councillor Donnelly said: "I am a proud member of a council that has joined the right side on this very important issue. In passing this vote, this council has reflected the thinking of the majority people here who welcomed the referendum in the South. These people are frustrated and embarrassed to be living in the only place in these islands where same-sex marriage remains illegal.
"Marriage equality does not only hold huge symbolic significance but would extend the same practical rights to same sex couples. Rights of inheritance, to be your wife or husbands next of kin, even the ability to declare yourself married, these are things heterosexual couples can take for granted and it is time same-sex couples were extended the same respect.
"I also welcome the due consideration to religious institutions demonstrated by the council by calling for their beliefs to be protected.
"This vote is evidence of the huge progress that has been made in Fermanagh and Omagh on this very basic matter of equality. The council has clearly declared by an almost two thirds majority that everyone has the right to love who they want and everyone has the right to have their love protected by the law."
Northern Ireland is the only region in the United Kingdom where same-sex marriage is against the law.
