The 21-year-old, who has not been named, was 32 weeks pregnant.
She was attacked by two men wearing motorcycle helmets in the Talfourd Place area; they pushed the victim to the ground before allegedly kicking and stamping on her stomach. They then fled the scene.
A man, aged 20, has since been arrested and charged with child destruction and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. It is understood a member of the public phoned for an ambulance at 8.16pm on Monday, but no ambulance arrived. The Metropolitan Police then cancelled the request at 9.25pm and its own officers took the woman to hospital. The London Ambulance Service has since apologised according to reports, and said the initial phone call had been assessed as a "lower priority call".
The woman remains in hospital in a critical condition.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police.
