'Love Locks' Removed From Paris Bridge

Almost one million 'love locks' are to be removed from a bridge in Paris.

The padlocks, which are fastened to one of the capital's main bridges by couples who are in love, have become a tourist tradition over the years. Couples place the lock on the Pont des Arts before they throw the key into the River Seine below.

However, the locks are now being removed due to damage. Last year, part of the bridge's railings collapsed as a result of the weight.

Removal of the locks started on Monday and is expected to take a few days to complete.

Workmen will remove almost one million locks during the work, weighing around 45 tonnes.

It is understood the grilles the locks were placed around will eventually be replaced by transparent panels.
