The research, from the Bank of Ireland and weddingsonline, found that being a guest at an Irish wedding can now cost €800, when gifts, an outfit, travel and accommodation to name but a few expenses are included.
A majority of the cost is said to go towards the amount of money spent on the gift, accommodation and the hen/stag party, with each costing the average guest between €100 and €200. However, while 50% of respondents spend around €150 to €200 on a new outfit for a wedding, the same recycle a previously worn outfit.
When it comes to buying a wedding gift, many said they would spend between €100 and €150 on something for a friend, while 40% confessed to spending more than €200 on a gift for a family member – and up to €200 for a very close friend. Interestingly, 87% said they will tend to give cash as a wedding present, with 94% admitting they would have preferred cash on their own wedding day as opposed to a gift.
Despite the ever-increasing costs of attending a wedding, however, 62% said they would not turn down a friend's invitation to their big day because of the cost. Just 30% of those polled said they save for social occasions like weddings, while 65% said they finance the cost from their current accounts. For 4%, they rely on a credit card or overdraft.
Sophie Pigott, weddingsonline's Marketing Manager, commented: "Wedding season is an exciting time for couples and guests alike but it does come at a cost. The wedding gift topic regularly comes back up in our discussion forums. A general rule is to cover the cost of your meal and a little bit more.
"Cash is definitely the most popular wedding gift followed by gift cards. While wedding gift lists are not as popular here as in the States, some couples use them to give their guests an idea of what they like or to cover their honeymoon costs."
