One In Four Proposals Take Place On Holiday

A new study has revealed that one in four marriage proposals take place on holiday.

The poll, commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, asked 2,154 recently married couples in the UK about the circumstances surrounding their engagement.

The couples were first asked, 'Where did the marriage proposal take place?'

Respondents were then asked to pick from a list of answers, or to select 'other' if they did not see their option on the list. The findings revealed that a majority of proposals (26%) will take place at home. This was closely followed by on holiday abroad (23%), while 16% said there proposal had taken place in a restaurant (UK). A scenic spot in the UK popular with 11% of those polled, while a romantic 8% admitted their proposal had occurred over the phone.

For those who said their proposal had happened on holiday, they were pressed as to the circumstances. For example, 42% said their other half had popped the question on a beach, while 21% said it was during a meal. For 12%, it was in their hotel room (or where they were staying), while 9% said their proposal took place on a busy street. Rounding off the top-five, 7% said they were proposed to at a scenic viewpoint. There were those couples that answered 'other' however – and these included bed, at an airport and even on the airplane.

51% of the respondents who said their proposal occurred on holiday said that it had been public in terms of the number of people looking on. However, 22% of the proposals were spontaneous, meaning there was no ring at the time.

And when it comes to the most likely destination for popping the question?

The Caribbean topped the list (26%), and was followed by America (13%), France (11%), Italy (11%) and Spain (5%).

Commenting on the findings, Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said: "What better place to pop the question then on holiday? You're both bound to be at your happiest and most relaxed – unless you're the one doing the asking, which case you could end up a bag of nerves! However, the settings on offer during a holiday are often hard to beat.

"Whether you're at the top of the Empire State Building, about to be hurled into the atmosphere on Space Mountain or on a secluded beach watching a sunset; it certainly beats proposing over a pint and a packet of crisps down the local pub.

"The Caribbean is clearly a favourite place for romance to strike, so those heading there this year with their significant other could perhaps be coming back engaged."
