The study, which has been carried out as part of a special for ITV Tonight – How To Get Into A Good School – 35% of parents admitted they had already, or would pretend, that they were religious if it would increase their child's chances of getting into their first-choice school. A further 43% of parents said they would move if it meant they would be inside the catchment area of a certain school, while 26% said they would as far as to falsify their address for the same reason. 12% confessed they had already done so.
When it comes to deciding school places, authorities will look at based on whether a sibling is already at the school, how close the family live to the school and any special circumstances a child may have. Schools are also allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion.
With this in mind, of the 1,000 parents polled, 39% said they have – or would have – a child baptised just to get them into a good school.
The parents were also asked if they feel any guilt over the lengths they are willing to go to in order to secure a spot for their child at their first-choice school. 45% said no, even if they knew their child had taken the place of another.
