The survey, by travel dating website Miss Travel, also found British men, as well as those from Australia also feature highly on the list of the world's most attractive men.
Some 66,000 American women and 44,000 men took part in the study.
Despite claiming the top spot last year, Australian men had to settle for second place this time around, with Ireland coming out victorious in the poll. The female participants decided that men from Pakistan were attractive, and they took third place in the poll, followed by their American counterparts, while the English rounded out the top five. The Scots finished sixth, just ahead of the Italians. Nigerian, Danish and Spanish nationals completed the top 10.
Of the men who took part in the poll, their answers varied – with Armenian topping their sexiest nationality list. Barbadian/Bajan was listed second, with American in third. Other sexiest nationalities to feature in the final 10 for women were Colombian, English and Australian. Last year's winners, the Brazilian's, had to settle for seventh place this year.
Commenting on the findings, the website states: "It's no surprise that diverse, exotic nationalities like Armenian and Bajan topped the women's list, voted for by men, as superstars like Kim Kardashian and Rihanna have commanded Instagram attention in the tune of millions of followers."
