New Tool Allows Midwives To Rank Their Income

A new online tool will enable midwives to rank their income on a global scale, it has been revealed.

The announcement comes ahead of the release of The Sunday Times' Rich List, which will be published this coming Sunday (26 April).

It is not clear if many midwives will be on the final list, but it is thought a midwife earning £25,000 would be in the world's top 1% in terms of income.

CARE, the humanitarian agency, has joined with the Global Rich List to allow users to see their "global wealth ranking", dependent on their salary, and to calculate how much they earn in an hour. An hour of the average midwife's salary, for example, could pay for three long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets in South Sudan, or pay for a trained midwife to deliver a baby safely.

Sarah Taylor Peace, Fundraising Director at CARE, said: "The Global Rich List is a nice reminder that we don't need to be millionaires to be philanthropists. It also shows us the huge impact such a gift can have on the lives of some of the poorest people in the world. Just a few pounds can really mean the difference between a life to lose, and a life to live."

Users of the 'rich list' site can also donate an hour's salary to CARE International, which will be doubled by the UK government until 6 July 2015.
