Bigamist Discovered After Facebook Challenge

A bigamist has been exposed – after a member of his second wife's family tagged him in a post on Facebook.

According to The Mirror, Andrew O'Clee, 36, first married Michelle, 39, in 2008 – eight years after they first met. However, unbeknownst to his partner, O'Clee then started dating a woman named Phillipa in 2011, while he and Michelle were trying to start a family. In 2013, O'Clee married Phillipa. It is understood that he was still married to his first wife, but had forged a decree absolute to show his family so they would believe he and Michelle had divorced.

His deception was first uncovered last year when his first wife saw he had been tagged in a Facebook post. The post was in relation to the charity craze 'Ice Bucket Challenge' that swept across the social media site in 2014 , where Mr O'Clee had been tagged in a photo by a member of his second wife's family. It was captioned: "uncle Andrew and auntie Philippa."

O'Clee then filmed his challenge – and posted it to Facebook where his wife saw it. She then discovered photos of her partner's second wedding and called the police. He was arrested in August 2014 and earlier this week, was jailed for eight months for bigamy on Tuesday.

O'Clee's deception started when he began an affair with his second 'wife'. He then forged a decree absolute to show his family that he had divorced Michelle. He then told his first wife that he was involved in a fraud case and had to enter the Witness Protection Program as his life was in danger. As a result, this would keep him away from their home for lengthy periods of time. Eighteen months later, Michelle went into labour with the couple's first child. O'Clee turned up five hours late to the birth; after cutting the umbilical cord, he made an excuse that the police were waiting to take him back to a safe house. In August 2013, he tied the knot with Phillipa.

Speaking at Chichester Crown Court, Judge Christopher Parker QC is quoted by the publication as saying to Mr O'Clee: "You began to develop a complicated and absurd lie. All of which was a complete nonsense but it enabled you to lead a double life.

"The question is, why on earth would you do it? You are a shameless liar, happy to have as much comfort wherever you could find it.

"Bigamy is an offence against the institution of marriage, an institution founded on complete trust. This was simply a selfish act."

Appearing in court, Michelle said he had no reason to not trust her husband, but added: "The day I found out about the bigamy was the day my world fell apart and the violent betrayal unfolded."

O'Clee admitted to one count of bigamy and is expected to serve half of his sentence in custody. While his first wife is thought to be living with her parents, his second 'wife' has vowed to stand by him.
