Further Support For Same-Sex Marriage

The governor of Guam, a territory of the US located in the western Pacific Ocean, has announced his support for same-sex marriage to be made legal.

The decision by governor Eddie Calvo comes just days after a couple filed a lawsuit against the island after they were denied a marriage licence application.

Governor Calvo has now called for a referendum to decide on the issue of same-sex marriage. Previously, in 2009, legislation in Guam rejected a bill to legalise civil unions between same-sex couples.

According to reports, Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson, issued a letter calling for a government agency to process licences for gay couples to marry. She is quoted as saying: "Marriage is a fundamental right which cannot be denied based on gender."

Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, another US territory, legislation is currently pending regarding same-sex marriage and amending legislation which defines marriage as that between a man and a woman.
