He told news.com.au: "Technically, we're married. We are separated and discussing what that means."
Meanwhile, his partner recently referred to them as "friends".
Crowe, 50, and Spencer, 45, first started dating in 1989, having met on the set of movie The Crossing. They dated on-and-off before reconciling in 2001. In April 2003, they tied the knot at the actor's cattle property in New South Wales. Their first child, a son named Charles, was born that December. Their second son, Tennyson, was born in July 2006.
