Couples Postpone Holidays Due To Babies

A new study has revealed couples will often delay going on holiday following the birth of their child.

In fact, the poll by sunshine.co.uk found that the average parent will wait five years after the birth of their child before they will consider going abroad for a holiday. Of the 2,895 adults surveyed, all of whom had a child aged eight or over, they had all taken regular holidays abroad before starting a family. They were then asked about the holidays they had taken since their child had been born.

Respondents were first asked, 'How long after your youngest child was born did you wait until going abroad on a holiday (either with or without them)?'

The average answer by parents was five years, but for 11% of those polled, they admitted they still hadn't been on a holiday abroad since the birth of their youngest child.

The parents were then asked the reasons as to the length of time they had waited before going away abroad. A number of answers were given, but the most common reason was, 'I/We didn't want to leave my/our child (61%). 43% felt that their child was too young to take abroad, so they remained in the UK, while 36% said it was because they could not afford a holiday. In addition, 17% said they had no one to look after their child, while 12% simply said they were too busy to go on holiday.

Elsewhere, the adults were asked, 'How soon after the birth of your youngest child did you feel like you needed a holiday/break away from the child?' An honest 82% said within three months of the birth.

Meanwhile, for those who have been on holiday abroad since the birth of their child, 52% admitted they had been away, but had not taken their offspring with them. When asked who was looking after the youngest during the trip, 72% said the child's grandparents had babysitting duties.

Commenting on the findings, Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said: "There's nothing to say having a baby should stop you going on holiday; when you feel comfortable leaving the child for a short period of time, you can always look into mini-breaks in short-haul destinations to have a well deserved breather."
