The English actress, who is currently starring in the movie The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has one son with actor Benjamin Whitrow, but the couple never married.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, the 62-year-old admitted that she viewed marriage as a "difficult promise" to make.
She explained: "I don't [regret not getting married]. Not that I don't admire people who do it, but I genuinely think it's a difficult promise to make. But I'm very lucky to have my son and I would have regretted not having him."
The couple's son, Angus, was born in 1994.
During the interview, the actress also revealed which famous face she would like to spend the night with.
"Jack Nicholson," she replied. "I mean, if you watch Jack on screen, he's kind of like a lunatic, but I love that. I aspire to be like him. Also, he doesn't take himself too seriously and I'm so bored by all these people who take themselves too seriously."
