Around 40 people attended the public meeting in Salthill, which was addressed by the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins and the Policy Director at the Gay & Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), Tiernan Brady.
Deputy Collins said: "We had a lively debate about the question that is facing voters on May 22nd. There is widespread agreement that this in extremely important moment for Ireland that will be watched with interest abroad.
"At the meeting in Salthill we heard some heartfelt stories from people of all ages who feel that it is only right that all Irish citizens should have the right to marry, regardless of the gender of their chosen partner. We answered questions about what this vote means for Ireland and for marriage.
"As a Republican Party, we strongly believe in promoting an equal and inclusive society. From the decriminalisation of homosexual acts in 1993 to the Civil Partnership Act of 2010, Fianna Fáil has played a pivotal role in legislating for key issues in the LGBT community. The Marriage Equality Referendum on May 22 is an important next step. That is why we are asking people to vote YES."
