Survey Reveals Key To Successful Relationship

A new survey has revealed that the key for a successful relationship, is for a couple to marry before having children.

The research, conducted by The Marriage Foundation, found that if a couple makes the decision to commit to each other before they start a family, the relationship will be more successful.

The findings showed that 76% of mothers who had tied the knot before having children remained married, compared to 44% of those who married after they had their first child.

In addition, walking down the aisle before having children and after was found to have a greater impact on a couple's chance of success than their level of education. Of the women who married before their first child, 82% with a degree stayed together, compared to 74% of non-degree educated women.

Elsewhere, and in line with previous research from the Marriage Foundation, 92% of couples surveyed who were still together after 15 years, were married. Of mums who were cohabiting at the time of their child's first birth, but never took the decision to tie the knot, only 31% were found to have avoided a marriage breakdown by the time their child sat their GCSE exams.

Harry Benson, Research Director of Marriage Foundation, carried out the study, with analysis from Stephen McKay, a professor in social research at Lincoln University. The research used data from Understanding Society – a UK longitudinal study that regularly surveys 40,000 households.

Commenting on the findings, Harry Benson said: "This is really exciting new research which shows that education and age do not dictate the success of relationships as was previously thought.

"It barely seems to matter if women are younger or older, degree educated or not; so long as they make a plan for their future and marry before starting a family, they have a really good chance of making that relationship last.

"It stands to reason that there's one system that works best. It's one that worked for years. While it is right that we have done away with the social shame of having children outside marriage, we should not lose confidence in the value of crystallising commitment before starting a family.

"The message of this research is clear. For any couple thinking of having children, their best chance of staying together in the long run is by getting married first."
