The report, 'Why children die – Part E', has been launched by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and the National Children's Bureau NI (NCB NI). It includes statistics for avoidable infant death, and it revealed that the region has the highest rate of infant mortality for babies under the age of one. Of the 182 young people – under the age of 19 in 2012 – 49% of the deaths were in children under the age of one.
The findings have said a number of these deaths could however be avoided by reducing the incidence of preterm birth and low birthweight. The report added though that it is difficult to make a definitive conclusion as to the reasons for the rates, saying that further research is required.
Interventions are needed, it continued, highlighting the issue of breastfeeding as an example. Northern Ireland has the lowest breastfeeding rate in the UK. In 2010, initial breastfeeding rates for NI was 64%. This compares to 71% in Wales, 74% in Scotland and 83% in England.
In order to improve the rate, the report said a greater emphasis needs to be placed on breastfeeding support and education, particularly for young mothers and those living in areas of higher deprivation.
Smoking among pregnant women was another issue addressed in the report. In NI in 2012, 16% of mothers were said to have smoked during pregnancy. This increased to 37% of mothers under the age of 20 and for those living in areas of deprivation, it was 29%.
In order to improve the statistics, the report said measures need to be put in place, such as educating young people in school on the importance of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
