The study, conducted by thinkmoney.co.uk, added that while 9% of women do not contribute towards a first date at all, 17% admitted they would be willing to pay the full cost of a date.
When it comes to splashing the cash, a third of men said they would be happy to spend between £40 and £60 on a date – with 23% of women saying the same. 15% of men said they would spend more than £80 on a first date, with just 3% of women willing to do the same. Interestingly, however, the research revealed that women only tend to spend between £20 and £40 on a first date.
Of the 2,000 people who took part in the poll, 49% said when it comes to that initial meeting with a potential partner, meeting up for drinks is the best way to get to know them, while 27% said they prefer to go out for a meal. 11% would choose to go to the cinema, and then to dinner.
Ian Williams, spokesperson for thinkmoney.co.uk, is quoted as saying: "When it comes to dating, old habits really do die hard – at least for men. Whilst two thirds of women are happy to go halves on the night, 80% of men think it is up to them to stump up for the whole thing.
"Men also seem more inclined to splash the cash on first dates, perhaps to try and impress, with most willing to spend 50% more than women."
