Interestingly, the research, carried out by Häagen-Dazs, also revealed that more than half of the men had fallen in love with up to five different partners.
Of the 2,000 adults surveyed, 47% of women said they had only had one true love, while 39% of men said the same. However, 51% of men said they have loved between two and five partners, but just 45% of women said the same.
Three-quarters of men and women said they did believe in 'true love', while only a small percentage from both sexes (5%) said they had never fallen in love. The study added that most of these respondents were under the age of 24 and still waiting for the right person to come along.
Elsewhere, tradition still rules where romance is concerned with one in three saying a relationship is 'serious' when they get to meet each other's families, while one in five said it was when one partner says 'I love you' to the other. 3% confessed that they think a fling becomes a relationship once they sleep with the person.
Häagen-Dazs teamed up with The School of Life for the study.
Lucy Beresford, School of Life psychotherapist, is quoted as saying: "It was refreshing to see that real love still exists and isn't all about physical attraction, but rather real values such as honesty.
"It's a shame to see that our busy lifestyles often act as an obstacle to spontaneity which really can keep a relationship alive."
