According to a report by the Times of India, the groom – 25-year-old Jugal Kishore – suffered an epileptic seizure on his wedding day and was taken to hospital. However, he had not told his partner of his medical condition and while he was receiving treatment, she was alleged to have said she would "happily marry someone else at the wedding".
So her sister's brother-in-law, Harper Singh, is reported to have stepped into the role.
The publication added that the actual groom later returned to the venue only to find his wife, Indira, and married another man. His family tried to get the bride to change her mind, but she refused.
A number of the guests were later arrested after a fight erupted.
The situation was later resolved "amicably", local police said.
