The poll, commissioned by notonthehighstreet.com, revealed that one in five women said a man is more attractive if he has a dog. This compares to just one in 20 women who prefer men who wear designer clothes, and 6% of women who appreciate it if a man drives an expensive car. In addition, having a dog is twice as appealing as a man who earns a large salary (11%), or owns a large house (12%).
The aim of the survey was to look at the biggest turn-ons for people, aside from physical attraction. Of those who participated in the research, half of the men admitted they prefer women who can make them feel relaxed, while four in 10 like to be complimented on their appearance. Men are also more likely to stick to traditional flirting techniques, such as maintaining eye contact (50%), teasing (32%) and buying a person a drink (16%) when it comes to impressing a potential partner.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for notonthehighstreet.com said: "It's surprising UK men are the most enthusiastic about employing 'old fashioned' romantic techniques, something which they perhaps aren't always given credit for.
"It's nice to see that in the generation of online and app dating, there is still fondness for the traditional ways of wooing."
The research coincides with the launch of Cate Mackenzie's 'The Art Of Flirting Workshop' in Old Street, London. This allows both men and women to develop their flirting techniques.
