The research, conducted by bookmakers William Hill, found the things making the list ranged from knowing how to change a fuse or tyre, to knowing how to install a shelf. Making sure they know who are the favourites to win the Premier League also made the shortlist, as did learning how to iron a shirt and doing their own laundry. The year England won the World Cup, being able to tell the difference between ale and lager, and how to light a barbecue are also said to be among the things every 'real' man needs to know.
Around 2,000 adults took part in the survey, and found that while some of the skills on the list are useful for day-to-day life, there are a few items which are also important when it comes to relationships. For example, a man should know a partner's favourite drink, how to change a nappy, and realising when a woman says 'I'm fine' that she actually is not fine are vital. Similarly, when a woman says 'Do what you want', a man should, in fact, not. Topping the list, however, of things a man should know is his wedding anniversary.
Elsewhere, things that missed out on a top 50 sport included never calling a woman 'cuddly', being able to undo a bra one-handed, and knowing the first rule of the film Fight Club.
Interestingly, of the men polled, almost half said they weren't up to date, going by the number of items on the top 50 list, while a further fifth had successfully faked their way through a football-related conversation, in an attempt to appear knowledgeable of the sport.
A spokesperson for William Hill said: "The results show the range of skills, facts and ways of thinking that we associate with the modern man. It shows a good blend of traditional values long associated with masculinity and the ability to master tasks that perhaps don't come as easily to modern man as they might to the generation before them.
"Having confidence balanced with an attentive nature and, of course, a bit of sporting knowledge, should set men up well when checking themselves against the list."
