Once this level of contentment is reached, couples are more willing to fully share their life with their other half.
The study, commissioned by Measure digital bowel health test and involving 2,000 couples, also revealed the things people feel more comfortable doing around their partner after almost a year of dating. For example, the comfort zone is said to have been reached when a partner is allows their other half to see them without make-up, to cry in front of them and to do his/her laundry.
Wearing 'unattractive' underwear, giving them the spare key to the house, talking about marriage and children, letting them look after you when you're ill and answering a partner's phone also made the list. However, while these all seem like natural things to happen in a relationship, some of the other 'comfort zone' signs aren't as pleasant – with breaking wind, squeezing a partner's spots and going to the toilet with the door open just a few to mention.
Sharing your life with a partner isn't always smooth sailing though, the poll revealed, as a third of respondents admitted they had been in a relationship where their other half were became too comfortable too quickly. A further fifth of respondents said a new partner had gone too far when they got in touch with their family members too soon into the relationship, or started questioning them about former partners.
A spokesperson for Measure digital bowel health test said: "It's interesting to see that it takes nearly a year for people to feel they can really be comfortable around each other.
"At first we're very conscious and don't want to be seen as anything but our best, but gradually over time we let people in more and more as our trust and confidence builds.
"Some might say the signs you've reached that place in a relationship can signal an end to the romance, but it's a good sign that you're comfortable in your partner's presence and can share any topic or worry with them without fear of being judged."
