The research, conducted by Heritage Bathrooms, found that the average cost of Valentine's Day is expected to exceed the £200 mark this year for people. The amount includes gifts for a partner, a meal in a restaurant and travel.
However, the poll added that while the cost is just for one day in the year, women would prefer the money went towards some much-needed DIY or decorating jobs around the home instead. In fact, 43% of women said they planned to spend £500 – or less – on updating their house across the entire year.
The survey also looked at decorating jobs that may need carried out when moving into a new home, with men and women having very different ideas. While 29% of women look for a place that needs redecorating in the living areas but features 'designer statements' elsewhere in the property, 32% of men find newly-painted walls and new carpets throughout a house as the deciding buying factor.
Commenting on the findings, Claire Jennings, Marketing Manager at Heritage Bathrooms, said: "Our research suggests that, post-recession, people are looking to make lasting investments in their homes.
"We're not surprised by the findings of our research and think that occasions like Valentine's Day are the perfect opportunity to request more practical gifts from our loved ones."
She added: "Generally, our research found that men like to have the final say on a colour choice in the home, but when it comes to bigger projects like the bathroom or kitchen, it's us women who lead the design choice."
