The Coronation Street actor confirmed the news in a new interview with OK! magazine.
North, who plays Gary Windass on the soap, proposed to his partner of two years during a recent holiday to the Lake District, and admitted popping the question left him feeling very emotional.
He told the publication: "I've always told her that if and when I propose, she'd never see it coming. We were staying in a lovely hotel in the Lake District and we were getting ready for dinner when I told her I had a birthday surprise for her outside.
"I asked her to shut her eyes. When she opened them I was down on one knee with the ring. I was looking up at Rachael, with my knees getting wet, and I just said: 'Will you marry me?'
"In the moment before I proposed I was shaking like a leaf. Then, when she said yes, I called my mum and just couldn't stop crying."
He added: "Rachael is the best thing that has ever happened to me – and I don't mind telling everybody! She's changed my life for the better."
The 28-year-old also joked about how he will deal with his emotions on the couple's big day.
"I am dreading that I'll just cry my way through it," he admitted. "I am very sensitive and bawling my eyes out all the time. My hard man reputation is absolutely ruined!"
