The clinic in Cannes was ruled to have been responsible for the mix-up and ordered to pay damages to both of the girls, their siblings and their parents.
According to reports, it is understood both of the babies had been treated in the same incubator shortly after their birth in 1994, and then unwittingly given to the wrong parents. At the time, the parents questioned the nurse about their daughter, because of concerns regarding their different skin tone and hair length, but they were still sent home. It was only 10 year later when one of the girls, Manon, felt she did not look like her father. Her parents underwent a series of tests and it was revealed that neither were her biological parents. An investigation was then launched and the two families were put in touch before taking the case to court. They have since distanced themselves from each other, and said they do not wish to reverse the swap.
Following a ruling on Tuesday, the clinic was ordered to pay €400,000 to each of the girls, while €300,000 was awarded to three of the parents. A further €60,000 each is to be paid to three siblings.
