Construction Workers 'Spend £244 On Valentine's'

Construction workers will spend an average of £244 on their partner on Valentine's Day, a new study has revealed.

The research, conducted by www.constructaquote.com, involved 2,109 men, aged 18 or over. They were asked if they worked full-time, and if they had been in a long-term relationship with their other half for at least six months. Firstly, they were asked if they knew how they would be spending 14 February 14 this year. Just 11% admitted they had already planned their Valentine's day, with a majority (74%) saying they had a "vague idea" as to how they would spend the day. The remaining 15% said they were leaving the planning to their partner.

The men were then asked how they were likely to spend the day. 23% said dinner and drinks in an expensive restaurant, while 17% were opting for a romantic night-in with a home-cooked meal. 14% said they would be taking in an overnight hotel stay, with 11% choosing a 'day of fun and adventure', such as going to the zoo, a theme park or the theatre. 6% were just going to keep things simple – with a spa day.

While it may be viewed as the romantic day of the year, however, it doesn't come cheap. In fact, when respondents were asked how much they would be spending on their Valentine's experience, including gifts, food bills and hotels, those working in the construction industry topped the list – with an average spend of £244. Other groupings of respondents by their work, saw the teaching/education centre the next most generous with an average spend of £185 this Valentine's Day. Marketing/Media (£168), the IT sector (£132) and Insurance (£118) rounded off the top five.

In contrast, 'Sales' and 'Automotive' industries were the least likely to splash the cash on their other half, with average spends of just £14 and £6, respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Lyndon Wood, CEO and creator of constructaquote.com, said: "There is no doubt the competition and pressure we are all put under when it comes to organising the perfect Valentine's Day in increasing year on year.

"Taking that into account, one cannot deny the sense of joy and love the day seems to generate for many happy couples.

"I certainly appreciate the romance of February 14th as much as the next man, and see nothing wrong in a little lavish spending to commemorate St Valentine.

"Our findings also highlight something I have been quite sure of for years; that construction workers, whilst giving off a macho impression to the public, are the most thoughtful when it comes to romantic gestures. Spread the love I say, everyday should be a Valentine's Day."
