Joseph Iwueke, 33, originally from Nigeria, was planning to tie the knot with Slovakian Ingrida Stojkova. A court heard the union had been planned so Mr Iwueke could remain in the UK.
Moments before the pair was due to marry, immigration officials and police raided the ceremony. They had received a tip-off from a registrar who noticed that when the pair had attended the register office the previous month, they were unable to spell the other's name.
Iwueke was also reported to have read information about his 'wife-to-be', from the back of his hand, the Daily Mail reported.
Both the bride and groom pleaded guilty to conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration law. Iwueke was jailed for two years and nine months for his role in the ceremony, while Stojkova was given a 15-month sentence.
Two other men, Obinna Odelugo, and Robert Stojka were also arrested at the ceremony. They were found to be in possession of bundles of cash, and were described as "fixers".
They were given sentences of two years and three months after admitting conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration law.
