The actress welcomed her first child with partner Ryan Gosling six weeks ago, but this is the first time she has confirmed that she is now a parent.
Speaking to Violet Grey's digital magazine, the 40-year-old also revealed that, for now, the couple are not hiring a nanny to help them raise their daughter, Esmeralda Amada.
Mendes told the publication: "I'm completely exhausted. I thought my wild nights were over but these are some of the wildest nights I've ever had."
She added: "I'm doing it without a nanny for now but I'm open to the idea of having a nanny in the future.
"For me that part of being a mother at this early stage is the struggle of not being able to sleep and not knowing what I'm doing and really going through it with her and battling out those nights."
The first-time mother also revealed that while she does receive support from the women in her family, she also consults parenting forums online.
"I read the comment section from other mothers because I find so much solace in that," she admitted. "Just knowing that I'm not alone out there and that other moms have gone through the same thing can at least get me through the night."
For Mendes, pregnancy rumours emerged earlier this year, but the actress and her partner, worked hard to keep out of the spotlight during those months. The couple, who are fiercely private about their relationship, never actually confirmed that they were to become parents, and even when they were reported to have welcomed a daughter they remained quiet.
Explaining why she stayed out of the media, she said: "Ryan and I decided early on to give her as much privacy as we could. And my pregnancy was the first opportunity to give her that. It's such an intimate time for the mother, too.
"I find the media's 'bump watch' obsession to be both intrusive and stressful. So I made a decision to eject myself from it completely."
And on choosing their daughter's name, she revealed: "Ryan and I both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and we just think it's a beautiful name. Amada was my grandmother's name. It means 'beloved' in Spanish."
Mendes and Gosling, 34, first started dating in September 2011 after they both starred in the movie 'The Place Beyond The Pines'.
