Fathers Now Help With Half Of Childcare Tasks

The average father in Britain now helps with at least 50% of the childcare, a new study has revealed.

The research, carried out by the Family Matters institute, ahead of the relaunch of parenting, lifestyle and advice website DAD.info, said the tasks fathers help with range from cooking and cleaning, to plaiting their daughter's hair.

However, 20% admitted they struggle to plait their little girl's hair. Cooking appears to be a preferred chore, but 55% said they do not use ready-made meals, instead opting to make a dish like spaghetti bolognese themselves.

More than a quarter of those surveyed added that the main reason for visiting parenting websites is to discover tips about cooking for their children. Around the same amount said they search for fitness or diet advice.

It isn't all smooth sailing for fathers though, who also revealed their parental concerns. Perhaps its not surprising therefore to discover that topping the list of worries is the subject of their teenage daughters' boyfriends. Their teenage son's dating life, how to have the 'facts of life' discussion and providing for the family are also worries for dad's today.

And when it comes to celebrity fathers to look to for inspiration, David Beckham topped the list, with Jamie Oliver and Homer Simpson coming in second and third place respectively. Brad Pitt, Simon Cowell and David Cameron also made it into the top 10.

Christopher Muwanguzi, CEO of DAD.info, said: "We're hoping that the DAD.info research knocks down some of the classic stereotypes society makes of fathers and instead paints a picture of a modern day dad who's a real family man.

"It's really interesting to see from the research findings that dads consider there to be more good in Homer Simpson than in some real life celebrity fathers. Likewise, the traditional dad role seems to be really changing, with dads ranking bedtime stories as their second favourite way of spending time with the children, while less than half would cook a ready-made meal."
