Five Charged After Pregnant Woman Trafficked Into UK

Five people have been charged after a pregnant woman was trafficked into the UK, Greater Manchester Police have said.

The woman was trafficked into the country in order to be sold into a sham marriage, they added.

The charges come after it was revealed on Wednesday (12 November), that a total of 13 people had been arrested in connection with an incident where a young pregnant woman had been tricked into visiting the UK, before she was 'sold' into a sham marriage.

The arrests were made at a number of addresses in the Cheetam Hill, Failsworth and Rochdale areas. Ten men and three women, aged between 24 and 57, were arrested for a number of offences including trafficking people for exploitation and conspiracy to facilitate breach of immigration law.

In an update, Greater Manchester Police said five people have now been charged with "conspiracy to hold another person in slavery/servitude and conspiracy to intentionally arrange/facilitate entry into the UK/other country of a person with a view to their exploitation". A further three men were also dealt with by Immigration after they were found to have overstayed their visas.

The five charged have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before Rochdale and Bury Magistrates Court today (14 November).
