Men 'Deliberately' Do Household Chores Wrong

A new survey has found that men will deliberately carry out the household chores incorrectly – so they won't be asked to do them again.

The research, commissioned by Victoria Plumb, involved 2,000 people who lived with a partner. Of those, 43% of men admitted they tend to make a mess of the household chores. While the findings may brand some men as lazy, four in 10 said they do a bad job because they want it over with as soon as possible so they can go back to what they had been doing beforehand. An honest 34% said they just can't be bothered spending time on the chores, while around a quarter only do it to keep their other half happy. For one in 10, they don't put the effort in because they know their partner will re-do it afterwards. For 30% though, they admitted they intentionally fail to clean the house properly in the hope that their girlfriend or wife will stop asking them to help.

When it comes to the household chores, three in 10 men said they will regularly make a poor attempt at washing the dishes, while a third opt to squirt bleach town the toilet as an alternative method to actually cleaning the bathroom. A quarter also rinse the bath or shower with water rather than cleaner, while some intentionally leave smears on the windows or mirrors when cleaning. Dusting around objects instead of moving them is another chore men openly admit to messing up, along with the ironing, vacuuming, making the bed and sweeping crumbs from the table or worktop onto the floor instead of the bin.

It's therefore not surprising then to discover that of those with 'poor' cleaning skills, one in four are no longer asked to help their partner, with 64% only being asked occasionally. Women aren't stupid though, as eight in 10 men confessed they had been busted by their other half, with 29% even being challenged about their efforts. 31% added their bad cleaning had caused rows between them and their partner.

In addition, two thirds of women don't trust their partner to do the cleaning properly, with six in 10 saying they would rather do it themselves anyway to ensure everything is cleaned thoroughly. On average, women will spend three hours and 37 minutes a week on the chores – compared to just two hours and 31 minutes for men.

A spokesperson for Victoria Plumb said: "Most guys will admit they don't always pull their weight when it comes to the cleaning, but it's worrying to see so many purposely do a bad job.

"Hardly anyone enjoys cleaning, especially the most hated chores like cleaning the bathroom, and it's likely your partner wants to avoid having to do it as much as you do.

"But intentionally doing something wrong, or half-heartedly in the hope you won't get lumbered with the task again in the future is a risky game.

"Your partner could see right through your plans and end up asking you to help out more often as a punishment. The easiest solution is to share the chores, without doing a bad job of them, so that everyone is happy."

The top ten 'tricks' used by men to get out of the household chores are:

1. Squirting bleach down the toilet instead of cleaning it

2. Rinsing out the bath/shower instead of cleaning it

3. Leaving the shower glass with smears

4. Leaving smears on mirrors and windows

5. Spraying cleaner around the bath/shower/sink and leaving it to soak instead of scrubbing

6. Dusting around objects instead of moving them

7. Sweeping crumbs onto the floor instead of into the bin

8. Pushing rubbish further down into the bin instead of emptying it

9. Failing to wash the dishes properly

10. Throwing the quilt over the bed instead of making it properly.
