Women Left 'Stressed' Juggling Work And Family Life

One in four women in Britain suffer from stress every day, with the feelings intensifying as they try to juggle their work and family life, a new study has found.

The research, which has been released to coincide with National Stress Awareness Day, also revealed that just one in 10 men feel the same amount of stress.

Some 2,000 people, aged between 25 and 50, took part in the study, and it was revealed that stress levels are higher when trying to achieve a work/life balance. And it is women who find it more difficult to fit everything into a working day; 42% of women were stressed, compared to just 31% of men.

For 21% of women, they admit to experiencing stress more than six times a week. As a result, their sleep, health and relationships start to suffer.

While 36% will lose sleep, one in 10 said they would often wake up in a panicked state. A further 36% said they find work and home life equally as stressful, with women more likely to feel pressure when trying to leave work on time.

Looking at home life, 39% of women said they put pressure on themselves to keep their house tidy, while 27% worry about not spending enough quality time together as a family.

When it comes to trying to deal with the stress, 16% said they turn to their close relations for help, but 32% admitted they also take their stress out on their loved ones. 35% of women said they turn to exercise to beat stress, with 30% of men saying the same. Women in general were found to be more proactive when addressing the issue, however, with 30% trying a relaxing bath, and 20% enjoying the support from family and friends. For 16% though, they do nothing to relieve stressful periods.

Nikki Kerrigan, a spokesperson for herbal stress remedy firm Kalms, said: "By identifying the nation's stress levels each year we can uncover where the pressure and stress stems from in everyday life.

"Creating a focus on these issues is really important to help people manage the stressful areas in their life.

"It is also really interesting to see that men and women vary so much in their triggers to stress. However, a good work/life balance still appears to be a difficult thing for everyone to achieve."
