Social Media's Increasing Role In Relationships

A new study has revealed that half of newlyweds in Britain update their relationship status on Facebook within 24 hours of tying the knot.

The research, which has been commissioned by Country House Wedding Venues, also found an increasing number of couples are also taking to social media to announce key milestones in their relationship. For example, 35% of those who got engaged announced their happy news online within a day, with 5% doing so within the hour.

When it comes to planning the big day, technology is also said to play a key role, particularly when it comes to the celebrity culture. Many brides-to-be are said to be influenced by the wedding style of the stars, for example, and a recent pink wedding dress trend which swept through Hollywood was reported to have filtered through to Britain, with women ditching the 'white dress' tradition.

In addition, more than one in five brides chose a dress featuring lace – similar in style to the gown worn by the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding in 2011.

Another tradition appearing to fall by the wayside is the venue. A growing number of couples are choosing to shun the typical church setting, with one in four ceremonies now thought to have a religious element to them. For 38% of couples, they admitted they would rather make their union unique to them, with many selecting a special theme for their day, such as 'vintage', or 'Game of Thrones'.

Some old-fashioned elements are still around though, with 85% of brides sticking to the 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' mantra, while 87% said they were given away by their father.

The study also found that the average cost of a wedding will set couples back around £20,000, with two-thirds of newlyweds confessing to going over their budget as they try to outdo others; while people today are most likely to meet through their friends (25.2%), while 24.3% met through work. Socialising (14.6%), online (13.7%) and school (9.7%) also made the list, as did the gym, for 1.3% of couples.
