Storage rooms are also said to be popular places for those looking to get down and dirty while waiting for their flight.
The survey, conducted by flight comparison website Jetcost.co.uk, also found that it appears to be a growing trend, following on the footsteps of the so-called 'Mile High Club'.
More than 2,500 people, aged 18 and over, from across the UK were asked about their airport experiences for the poll, and surprisingly, 76% admitted choosing to have sex in airport toilets, while 21% preferred a storage area or storage room.
Of those who did the deed, 12% confessed to being caught in the act by either airport staff or members of the public.
When asked why they had a sexual encounter at the airport, the answers varied. 32% said it was because they were "in the holiday spirit", and 27% said it was the "thrill" of possibly being caught.
When asked if they ever had a sexual encounter on an aircraft, just 4% said yes – with 31% of those being caught in the at.
It's not just Brits who get frisky when waiting for a flight.
A further 1,000 people from European countries were also polled. Of those, the Italians are the most amorous (17%), followed by the Spanish (14%) and the Germans (8%). Just 3% of the French said they gave in to their desires.
For other British travellers though, 79% said they spent their free time at the airport eating and drinking, while 52% said they read a book. Browsing the duty free was also popular with 30%, as was just sitting around (24%) and playing games (19%).
Antoine Michelat, co-founder of Jetcost.co.uk, said: "These results shocked us a little. We're surprised that more people haven't been caught in the act.
"Clearly, intimate acts in airports are even more common than those that take place on planes. I suppose one of the reasons many people are tempted is the thrill of knowing you're not supposed to be doing what you're doing, where you're doing it."
