Stewart, 24, was attending the screening of her new movie, Clouds of Sils Maria, at a Cinema Society Event when she was spotted with the actor, New York Post's Page Six reported.
The couple recently worked together on the film Equals, and it is thought they became close during that time.
Recently, a source was quoted by E! News as saying the actress was single.
"She [Kristen] is in a really, really good place right now," they said. "She is really happy with the films she is working on and she is in a great spot in her career.
"She is finally able to focus on herself and not worry about the nonsense that is out there. This is the best many close to her have seen her in quite a while."
Stewart was previously in a relationship with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson for four years, but they separated in 2013 after Stewart admitted to having an affair. Hoult, meanwhile, formerly dated actress Jennifer Lawrence.
