In an interview with OK! magazine, the 41-year-old explained: "I didn't want the kids to get confused because they knew her as a friend.
"I sat them down and said, 'Right, kids, we need to have a talk. Me and Emily love each other. We've known each other for three years, I love her and I'll marry her one day'.
"Bista [Princess] rolled her eyes and Junior said, 'Dad, we're not stupid'. But we still don't kiss in front of them now."
Andre and McDonagh, 25, met four years ago. In January, they welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Amelia. Just days before they became parents, the couple announced their engagement.
They have now said they plan to tie the knot next year in a "small and traditional" ceremony.
