The findings have been revealed in a survey commissioned by BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour which looked at the various household chores couples face, as well as who is responsible for certain jobs around the home.
For example, 86% of women said changing the bed sheets was their chief responsibility, followed by cleaning the toilet (83%), whereas 80% of men were in charge of emptying the bins and DIY jobs (78%). While cooking was found to be the most popular job around the house, the least popular tasks for both sexes were ironing and cleaning the toilet.
In addition, 27% of cohabiting couples admitted to arguing over the household chores several times a month, with disagreements more likely to occur between younger couples.
Jane Garvey, presenter of Woman's Hour, commented: "Times have changed. Women can go out to work then come back and start the housework."
Adam Ludlow, of polling firm ComRes, which undertook the survey, said: "These results indicate there is a clear divide between the sexes when it comes to housework.
"It's also interesting to note that in polls of this kind, men tend to be bolder in their claims often leading to overestimation whereas women tend to be more cautious and err on the side of underestimation."
