The poll was run by the Belfast Telegraph and asked 1,089 respondents across Northern Ireland about the issue, which has previously been rejected by the region's Assembly.
Respondents were asked: "Westminster has legalised same sex marriage, although churches have a right to refuse to perform the ceremonies. Should this law be extended to Northern Ireland?"
The findings revealed that 50.5% support the idea of same-sex marriage, while 49.5% oppose it. The figures do not include 'Don't Knows' (DKs). When the Don't Knows are included, 40.1% were in favour, 39.4% were against and 20.5% were DKs.
When the last poll was taken in late August/early September 2013, the figures were 27% in favour of equal marriage, 30% against and 43% said they had no opinion on the matter.
Elsewhere, when DKs are included, 55.1% of 18 to 24-year-olds said they supported extending marriage rights to same-sex couples. Of those aged between 25 and 44, 50.6% were in agreement with changing legislation, while those over 65 were mostly opposed to the idea (58%).
Men were also more supportive of the issue than women, at 46.6% to 34.2% respectively, with 52.3% of women saying they were undecided on the issue. Protestants were found to be more supportive of gay marriage than Catholics, 34.6% to 24.3% respectively, while those of other religions (49.7%) or no religion at all (51.6%) were more supportive of new legislation.
