An agent for Cheick Tiote, who plays for Newcastle United, addressed the reports on Monday, confirming: "I can say that he did get married and that it is his second marriage. This is nothing unusual. He is a Muslim."
The 28-year-old footballer lives just outside Newcastle with his wife Madah and their two children. However, according to a report by Ivorian news website iMatin, Madah is said to have "fainted" after discovering her husband had married for the second time after seeing photographs on social media.
Tiote is also said to have a mistress called Nkosiphile Mpofu, or 'Nikki', with whom he has a one-year-old child. It is claimed Ms Mpofu has since ended her relationship with the footballer.
Under Islamic law, a man can have four wives, and a source has been quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "He [Tiote] doesn't see a problem with having two wives. It's perfectly acceptable in his culture. He doesn't see he has done anything wrong and doesn't know what the fuss is all about."
