For mothers, the school run is said to be the most stressful time of day, closely followed by getting to work on time after the school run, and cooking dinner for the family.
The study, commissioned by Kia to mark the launch of Walk to School Month next month, also found that parents' stress levels also increase when they try to calm their children down if they are misbehaving, as well as waking them up and getting them out of bed in the mornings.
Mothers are said to feel stressed the most, with an average of seven times a week; for fathers, they claim to get stressed five times a week, again, some of which is blamed on the school run.
Many of the parents polled also face a journey to work once they drop their offspring at school, and the study found that the average parent has to make a nine mile trip across town, in rush hour, in just 21 minutes. Almost two-thirds of parents admitted to speeding in order to make sure they arrived at work on time.
Furthermore, more than eight in 10 mums admitted they had reconsidered their working hours as they can be affected by the school run; while 83% said they are unable to cope with juggling the school run and getting to work on time.
Half of mothers said they were left to do the school run most of the time, with almost a third of fathers saying the same. For two thirds of parents, they honestly admitted they dreaded the school run, with many arguing it would be much easier if they could start work at a later time – or not have to go to work at all.
One in six advocated for an initiative that would allow their child to walk to school safely within an adults led group.
Commenting on the findings, Stephen Kitson, director of corporate communications at Kia Motors, said: "Weekday mornings are a bit hectic for parents, with getting the children ready as well as themselves and fighting their way through traffic.
"It looks like parents need a bit of a helping hand when it comes to the school run, as even those who don't do it regularly can suffer consequences of bad traffic and awkward timings.
"While the school run had been found to be the most stressful time of the day, parents have many other things to contend with in the morning.
"It would be so much better for parents if they had another option in the mornings and not have to worry about getting to school for the morning bell."
