Katona married her fiancé George Kay earlier this month, and was discussing the couple's ceremony when the subject of wedding gifts arose.
She admitted that she asked guests to make a small monetary donation, rather than an actual item, because she said she is bankrupt and needs the cash.
Speaking to OK! magazine, the 34-year-old revealed: "No, I have asked for money. Just a fiver in a card will do. I'm bankrupt and I've got five kids to feed."
She added that her financial troubles had also impacted on her recent wedding.
"There was a ring my nan wore which was blue in a white gold band. It was beautiful. I was going to buy a similar ring but it was so expensive. It was £300 and I can't afford that," she explained.
However, despite this, Katona and Kay are expected to jet off on a luxury honeymoon.
"I'm going to the Caribbean for 10 days first class," she said. "It was a wedding present from [friends] Rob Jarrett and his partner Analita, which I thought was a wind up at first."
Katona and Kay have been in a relationship since 2012, but have been friends for a number of years. They announced their engagement in 2013 and married in Gloucestershire earlier this month.
In April 2014, welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Dylan Jorge. While Dylan is Kay's first child, his wife is also a mum to Molly 12, and Lilly Sue, 11, from her first marriage to Brian McFadden, and Heidi, seven, and six-year-old Max from her second marriage to Mark Croft.
