A Woman's Happiness Is Key To A Long Marriage - Study

New research has claimed that the secret to a long marriage, is to ensure the wife is happy; and the happier they are, the better.

That is according to a new study which has been published in the Journal of Marriage and Family. Researchers behind the claims found that the more content a wife is with her marriage, the happier her husband will also be with his life as a result.

Dr Deborah Carr, of Rutgers University, said of her findings: "I think it comes down to the fact that when a wife is satisfied with the marriage she tends to do a lot more for her husband, which has a positive effect on his life.

"Men tend to be less vocal about their relationships and their level of marital unhappiness might not be translated to their wives."

However, she added: "For both spouses, being in a better-rated marriage was linked to greater life satisfaction and happiness."

For women though, their mood is dampened when if their husband is unwell and they are left to take on the role of carer. Interestingly, the happiness levels of men did not change if their wife was sick, with the role of carer actually going to the daughter.

Experts said the latest findings are important as health and wellbeing can be affected by marriage quality.
