Parents Pay More For School Catchment Area Privileges

Parents in Britain are willing to spend an extra £50,000 on a property if it falls within a desirable school catchment area, a new study has revealed.

10% of parents are willing to pay this amount, while a further 29% have moved house specifically to be in the catchment area for a good school.

The research, which has been commissioned by Confused.com, also found 24% are willing to rent an additional property in the catchment area for a good school.

Elsewhere, many parents confessed they would 'cheat the system' if it meant securing a top spot for their child. For example, almost one in 10 parents said they have given a false address within the catchment area of a good school to make sure their child got a place there. Other underhand tactics include 7% faking religious observance to get into a well performing local school, while 4% claimed that a sibling already attends a local school.

The race to secure a place at a good state school means that some parents are now making decisions on where they will live before their children are even of school age. Some 18% of parents said they started thinking about what school to send their child to before they were even born, with a further 12% going as far as putting their unborn child's name down on a school waiting list. For more than a third of parents (32%), there is a worry that there are currently not enough places available for children at good schools.

And when it comes to the admissions system for pupils, 17% argue places should be decided on a child's academic ability, while 13% went as far as to say parents should be able to pay their way in. 24% did feel that admissions need to be fairer so that the best schools aren't just for those who can afford to live nearby.

Gareth Lane, Head of Home Insurance at Confused.com, said: "Although household finances remain stretched, it is significant to see from our research that a number of parents are willing to pay more on the price of a new home to ensure their child is in the catchment area for a good school.

"Choosing the right school for your child is possibly one of the most important decisions a parent will make. However, it's concerning that inflated house prices could be impacting choices for children in education by pricing people out of areas with good schools."
